Port Dalhousie Views

This was a blustery day at Port Dalhousie.  You can see the fence line across the pier at the lighthouse:  both piers are permanently barred so that you can no longer walk to the end.   It still is a great walk, and there are always people there - walking and fishing. The views are panoramic at Port Dalhousie - the first is North to Toronto with a laker on the water in the distance.  The second image is west towards Grimsby, and the third is east across the Marina. I thought you might enjoy the last image of the floating restaurant.  It would have been busy and fun in the summer with the size of the marina.  Now everything is out of the water and shrink-wrapped for winter.

Skies Count

What a difference a week makes - Niagara had beautiful colours yesterday - golden yellows were in abundance on the escarpment. What I noticed was the difference the sky makes in a photography.  Look at the top two - same view at Locust Lane (Hidden Bench winery) towards the Lake, which can just barely be seen in the background.  The first image has more emotional appeal with the clouds 'pulling' the trees upward. Our second comparison is the tree that I've been photographing on Moyer Road, in Vineland, where Vineland Estates is located.  The second image seems to have greater appeal - with the clouds higher on the horizon, giving the tree room in the landscape to be fully appreciated.

Niagara Scenes

This is Southbrook Vineyards on the Niagara Stone Road.  As it faces south in an open expanse, it has reflections of the sky all through the day.  This is the reflecting sky at sunset.  It is an imposing  structure - the wall stretches 200 metres long and is periwinkle blue in colour.  It changes in the day's light from the deep blue we see here to a dove grey in bright light.  In front of the building there usually are ponds reflecting the wall and building.  

Jack Diamond is the architect and the building won the 2009 International Architecture Award.  Looking out from the winery, one sees the Skyway that stretches over the Welland Canal. The picture shown here was taken in the spring of 2012 and the flowers in the field are dandelions.  

Turn Around and It's All Different

Something I notice in Niagara is how different the weather is from place to place. Yesterday I was in St. Catharines with pretty skies of a sun behind transparent clouds, and when I got back to Grimsby it was stormy clouds crowding the horizon and speeding along.

I was in Niagara Falls a few weeks ago and at Queenston Heights took some pictures of Brock's Monument.  You can see how different the sky and clouds are from these two opposite angles.

Stormy Skies Up on the Escarpment

I experience a different landscape up on the escarpment in Grimsby.  There are some orchards and vineyards, but the corn fields in these pictures seem more common.  And does the wind blow!  A storm came in earlier this week with high winds.  These bold, cloudy skies forewarned us.
